We believe that A.I Vision will play a critical role in keeping a high safety standard in the workplace. More than 65,000 cases involving days away from work occurred due to head injuries in the workplace according to the 2015 report by the National Safety Council. That same year, 1,020 workers died from head injuries sustained on the job. Many of these injuries and deaths could have been prevented if a hardhat was properly worn. With A.I. Vision, cameras can accurately detect if workers are wearing hardhats.
Problem
At large facilities and job-sites, there can be a large number of employees and contractors — with limited oversight, supervision, and training. Historically, it has been the job of supervision and management to ensure PPE procedures are being followed. It is not uncommon to see workers not wearing their hardhats in areas where hardhats are required.
Solution
With Canopy Vision’s Hard Hat model, you can automatically detect when someone is not wearing their hardhat and trigger an alarm immediately — whether this is a physical alarm in the field, an SMS message, or an email, you can configure a range of outputs to ensure the right people are informed. Additionally, you can establish a region of interest where it is required for hardhats to be worn — the alarm will only trigger if a person is detected within this area without a hardhat. See the Video below showing how quickly the A.I. model sounds an alarm:
By leveraging a pan/tilt camera Canopy Vision is able to selectively track people who are not wearing hardhats by sending commands to the Pan/Tilt unit to track the person with the camera. This capability can work with most off-the-shelf IP security cameras due to the ability of the Canopy platform to interface with ONVIF compliant cameras.
Our Hard Hat model was trained on thousands of images and has been optimized for fast and efficient operation at the edge on low-cost A.I. hardware. All users of the Canopy Vision platform have access to this model and can deploy it without additional cost in their facilities.
This model can be deployed with existing cameras, even if those cameras were installed for a different purpose! With Canopy, you can add A.I. to existing camera streams without interrupting the original camera’s intended functionality.
Summery
We explore one of the many use cases for Canopy Vision. Here we show how it can be used to detect if someone on site is wearing a hard hat or not, as well as how Canopy Vision can alert the user that he or she is not wearing their hard hat or removed it.
